Firefox CSS Fonts Creating Error Symbols – Fix

So while trying to open webpages such as FontAwesome.github.io for a flash project I’m currently working on, I ran into an issue where logos and fonts were appearing as small error boxes in Firefox 32.0.3 (latest version) with not addons.

I found it annoying especially when what obviously were symbols were links and were hard to find.

Thinking it was a system font missing I tried running sfc /scannow and installing all symbol fonts I could find. This did not fix anything.

After resetting firefox by restarting with no addons and clicking reset I searched over 50 pages for solutions when the problem was still occuring. I ran into .htaccess fixes and absolute path css edits but this was a multiple site problem so the problem wouldn’t be fixed with any of those solutions.

Finally I found the fix and I’m going to list it here for people to easily fix the issue on their end.

Open tab and type address “about:config” and accept the comical warning message.

  •  Type in the top filter text field “network.http.sendRefererHeader” set this value to 2.
  •  Type in the top filter text field “gfx.downloadable_fonts.enabled” set this value to TRUE by double clicking.
  •  Type in the top filter text field “security.fileuri.strict_origin_policy” set this value to TRUE by double clicking.
